Transforming Immigration Systems for Future Skills (TRIM)

Date of project : 2025 - Project ongoing

TRIM is a transdisciplinary research and development project that examines the functioning of the immigration system from the perspectives of education and the labour market.

The TRIM project brings together perspectives from economics, technology studies, education research and migration research. The project focuses on transitions, meaning individual pathways in studies and careers as well as the institutional structures that either support or hinder progress. The research analyses the functioning, performance and capacity for renewal of competence-based and human rights-based systems.

Technological change, particularly the development of artificial intelligence, runs through the project’s research. New technologies are changing skills requirements in the labour market and require the immigration system to adapt. At the same time, they offer opportunities to develop immigration processes, which calls for careful consideration of the ethics of AI. The project carries out interventions and develops technological and organisational solutions in cooperation with authorities, employers, educational institutions and other societal actors.

The TRIM project is divided into five work packages, of which Work Package 3 is led by Janne Tukiainen, Research Professor at the VATT Institute for Economic Research. In Work Package 3, we examine immigrants’ education and career pathways and their integration into the Finnish labour market. We use register data, experimental surveys, interviews and machine learning to study transitions between different parts of the immigration system and to identify skills-related challenges and barriers to employment.
