Teemu Lyytikäinen appointed research professor at VATT
Teemu Lyytikäinen, a long-time chief researcher and research leader at the VATT Institute for Economic Research, has been appointed research professor. VATT’s management decided on the change of position in December 2024.
In December, VATT received a new research professor when Teemu Lyytikäinen, PhD, a long-time chief researcher and research leader, was appointed research professor. VATT’s management decided on the change of position. Lyytikäinen’s work and responsibilities will remain unchanged.
“This position of a research professor is an important recognition for me of the work I have done at VATT. I really enjoy working at VATT and am committed to our common goals. This is why it is wonderful that I was appointed professor at VATT,” says Lyytikäinen.
According to the appointment decision, Lyytikäinen was found to be qualified to the position of a professor based on external evaluation statements. In his position as a research leader, Lyytikäinen leads the research theme of public services and local public finances, and his main research subjects include the housing market, housing policy and urban economics.
Lyytikäinen is a respected specialist in housing subsidies and taxes, as well as municipal funding and economics. He has several research projects in progress.
“My goal is to continue to conduct research on the impact of policy measures. Meeting scientific quality criteria is important for the reliability of results. Various expert tasks such as statements on legislative proposals and participation in the public dialogue will still be part of my work. In addition, I aim to support researchers under my research theme in their work and promote the procurement of research funding,” says Lyytikäinen.
In recent years, municipal finances have increasingly been the subject of Lyytikäinen’s research, which he conducts with various colleagues and partners.
“For example, we study how changes in the state funding received by municipalities affect municipal taxes and expenses, and what impact the job market and migration have on these changes. We are also conducting a very interesting and topical study on the impact of real estate tax collected from power plants on wind power construction in municipalities and the impact of wind turbines on housing prices,” he says.
Housing policy and the housing markets offer a research topic that affects many people’s lives. “Currently, we are studying how the loss aversion of home owners, meaning the decrease in the expected price for a home below the previously paid purchase price, affects relocation and housing transactions.”
Lyytikäinen prepared his doctoral dissertation at VATT and gained his PhD in economics at the University of Helsinki in 2009. From 2009 to 2011, he worked as a researcher at the Spatial Economics Research Centre of the London School of Economics. He returned to VATT as a senior researcher in 2011 and later advanced to the position of chief researcher and research leader. Lyytikäinen has also worked as Secretary-General of the Economic Policy Council.
In addition to Lyytikäinen, there are three other research professors at VATT: Tuomas Kosonen, Tomi Kyyrä and Marita Laukkanen.
