Open position: Senior Researcher - Business Taxation and Regulation
We are looking for a senior researcher to a permanent position to strengthen our Business taxation and regulation research group. A senior researcher's research projects mostly focus on the effects of taxation and business subsidies on company decisions. Research projects may focus on the effects of Finnish tax reforms or European Union tax harmonization measures, among others.
About the workplace
VATT Institute for Economic Research is an economics research organisation of roughly 50 people. We carry out high-quality scientific research to support evidence-based policy making and to promote effective fiscal policy. Our analyses serve decision makers, policy analysts and specialists, and the public debate.
Our research focuses on five themes:
• Local public finance and provision of public services
• Energy, climate and environmental policy
• Social security, taxation and inequality
• Labour markets and education
• Business taxation and regulation.
VATT is located in the Economicum complex in downtown Helsinki. We collaborate closely with the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics located in the same complex. VATT also hosts Finland’s Economic Policy Council. We are one of three partners in the Centre of Excellence in Tax Systems Research, funded by the Academy of Finland through years 2022—2029.
Work tasks
We are looking for a senior researcher to a permanent position to strengthen our Business taxation and regulation research group.
The position includes conducting research independently and with other researchers of the group, policy work, participation in project planning and applying for research funding.
A senior researcher's research projects mostly focus on the effects of taxation and business subsidies on company decisions. Research projects may focus on the effects of Finnish tax reforms or European Union tax harmonization measures, among others.
Qualifications
A successful candidate:
• has a doctoral degree in economics
• has prior experience in applied microeconometric research
• is able to work independently and in a target-oriented manner
• is expected to develop their own long-term research agenda and to become an active member of the research group.
We also value a record of scientific publication, international collaboration, and prior experience in financial economics and the use of firm-level data. Experience in applying external research funding will be considered an advantage.
Language skill requirement
A successful candidate is highly proficient in written and spoken English.
Scope of employment
Form of employment: Permanent employment
Scope: Office work
Flexible office hours, regular working hours 36h 15m /week.
Commencement: 1.3.2022 or per agreement.

The position is shared by the agency. Posting is subject to a 6-month trial period.
Salary
The post-specific salary is placed in requirement level V9 (€3,684.74). Additionally, the salary includes a performance-based component which may not exceed 50% of the post-specific salary.
