Kari Hämäläinen is chief researcher at the VATT Institute for Economic Research and adjunct professor of economics at the University of Jyväskylä. His research subjects include labour market and labour policy matters. He has a broad and diverse experience in the evaluation of the effectiveness of policy measures.
Kari gained his PhD from the University of Warwick in 1999. He has been principal economist and research director at VATT since 2002. Prior to VATT he worked at the Labour Institute for Economic Research, as an acting professor of economics at the Helsinki School of Economics (now Aalto University), at the Prime Minister’s Office, at the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy and the University of Jyväskylä. He has supervised and examined several PhD theses in economics.
Besides his research activity, Kari has numerous expert roles. He is currently e.g. a member of the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity.
